Rehabilitation There are several key variables that you’ll want to consider when structuring the rehabilitation program following a CARTICEL® implantation: - Creating a healing environment
- Understanding the biomechanics of the knee
- Restoring soft tissue balance
- Reducing pain and effusion
- Restoring muscle function
- Gradually progressing applied loads
Each rehabilitation program should be modified to fit the patient’s specific requirements. Depending on the location and size of your cartilage injury, patients may be able to return to full weight bearing by eight weeks, low-impact sports at six months, and high-impact sports by one year. Not all patients will achieve full function. Individual patient results will vary. For more rehabilitation information, please contact your sales representative for the CARTICEL Rehabilitation Guidelines. A rehabilitation program would vary depending on the surgeon’s assessment of the following criteria: - Location of defect (femoral or trochlear)
- Patient factors (age, weight, muscle tone)
- Depth of osteochondral lesion
- Concomitant procedures (osteotomy, meniscal allografts, ACL)
There are usually four distinct phases of rehabilitation based on the patient’s healing process following CARTICEL implantation. Certain criteria must be met before the patient can progress through each phase of the program; the rate at which criteria are achieved vary from patient to patient. When a patient achieves the goals of a particular rehabilitation phase, he or she may be moved to the next phase at the surgeon’s recommendation.
